In a timely and strategic acquisition, SAP purchased SmartOps, a provider of inventory and service-level optimization solutions slated to fit into supply chain management.

SAPs HANA platform, cultivated after many years of research, has finally been introduced to the marketplace with unique capabilities aimed at Big Data. HANA is able to process high volumes of data in real time, a partial answer of how to work with all the data generated around us. SmartOps unique, first mover solution uses large-scale, stochastic algorithms to limit uncertainty in supply chain planning in areas such as inventory, demand, lead time, capacity, etc. With algorithms that can take a big bite out of the big data and SAPs ability to process the results in real time, a powerful offering has emerged.

This is no small topic; Gartner estimates Big Data will drive $34B of IT spending more insights to follow.
